In a contemporized version of Don Quixote, the fictional character, Roy Neary, from the film Close Encounters is brought into lived experience. Purchasing a three hundred dollar station wagon and filming while following Neary’s pilgrimage from Muncie Indiana to Devil’s Tower Wyoming, Van Aken then built and acted upon sculptural sets installed in various galleries and museums until he completed the entirety of the life of Neary, up to his fateful meeting with aliens.
